Hap is a Shetland word meaning a warm covering, or to wrap up warmly. Whilst the North West of England may not be as cold and windy as the Northern Isles, traditional Shetland Hap Shawls and Blankets are a charming and cosy addition to your home and wardrobe. They are often overlooked in favour of the Shetland Lace Shawls, but they are just as rewarding to knit, encompassing all the techniques of lace knitting. This class will give you some of the histroy, the techniques needed to work lace and start you on your own project.

PRESENTER: Helen Chatterton

Helen was born in Bury, Lancashire into a textile based family in a textile town. Her Scottish mother taught her to knit and a lifetime love of fabrics and yarn was born.
She studied Classics at Liverpool University and on graduating took a secretarial course, then moved to London where she married. In 1986 Helen and her husband returned to Liverpool, and after having two children she completed her City and Guild Part II Creative Studies in Knitwear at Huddersfield Technical College, commuting once a week from Liverpool.
Whilst at Huddersfield, in addition to the knitwear aspect, and sponsored by Rowan Yarns, her tutor, Bradford-based textile and costume artist Christine Hughes encouraged her to experiment with textile media. Helen started working with velvet and developed samples for cushions and throws. After commissions from family and friends she formed the company Perfection of Production and has a growing presence in high quality shops and galleries.
She continues to knit and teach knitting and has attended a course run by Shetland College where she specialised in Fair Isle Knitting.

All the workshops are full days, starting at 10:00 and finishing at 16:00 with an hour for lunch.

The cost is £40 per person per workshop which includes all teas and coffees and lunch but excludes the cost of any materials used on the day. You will, however, receive a discount voucher which entitles you to 10% off all yarn purchases on the day of the workshop.

We can accommodate a maximum of 6 learners per workshop so that everyone can work in comfort and receive in-depth teaching.
