Canals, Costumes and Collections

The canals and waterways of this area played an important part in developing and gaining this area the position at the top of the textile industry, trading cotton from nearby mills. Located alongside the Macclesfield canal at Clarence Mill, is the Bollington Discovery Centre which tells the story of Macclesfield and how the Macclesfield Canal contributed to the town’s success. Through a range of interesting displays, guided walks and an extensive gallery of unique photos, Bollington Discovery Centre charts the history of this great mill and the Macclesfield Canal.

Many of the local textile related attractions house their own fascinating collections of textiles, ceramics, furniture and costumes. Visit Knutsford Heritage Centre which houses a permanent exhibition, with exhibits and a video on the story of Knutsford, detailing the towns famous names, areas, associations and periods. The Gallery Exhibition Centre, a separate building to the rear of the centre, presents a changing array of exhibitions and events.
